RESUMO

As a safe, effective, economical, and convenient technique, tooth whitening is one of the most popular treatments for improving tooth discoloration. This review summarizes the theoretical and recent research developments in the classification and mechanisms of tooth discoloration, as well as the principles, agents, effects, and side effects of tooth whitening techniques. The aim is to provide a basis for the clinical treatment of tooth whitening techniques and to suggest possible new ideas for further research. The accepted mechanism of whitening is the redox reaction of oxides in the whitening reagent, and the whitening effect is remarkable. However, side effects such as tooth sensitivity and irritation of gum and other oral soft tissues can still occur. It is recommended that more monitoring be carried out in the clinic to monitor these side effects, and care should be taken to protect the soft tissues in the mouth during office whitening procedures. Furthermore, there is a need to develop new additives or natural whitening products to reduce the occurrence of side effects.

Objectives: Endodontic treatment of immature teeth poses a significant challenge, especially in achieving a proper seal using traditional obturation methods. Revascularization presents itself as an alternative approach to this problem, and the application of triple antibiotic paste (TAP) has been suggested as a means to achieve disinfection during the procedure. This study aims to compare the antibacterial properties of three different antibiotic combinations to assess their effectiveness on root canal disinfection. Materials and Methods: Eighty samples were employed to assess the impact of three antibiotic combinations on Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutans, and a combination thereof. The antibiotics included metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, and cefaclor (CCM), the commonly used TAP, and a double antibiotic paste (DAP) composed of metronidazole and ciprofloxacin. Dentin shavings collected using Gates-Glidden drills were placed in microtubes containing a 2ml standard bacterial suspension. Microtube contents were diluted and cultured on BHI agar plates, with colony counts calculated based on dentine shavings' weight in CFU/mg. Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's post-hoc tests were used for statistical analysis and P<0.05 was considered significant. Results: A significant difference in mean CFU was observed among all bacterial groups (P<0.05). Dunn's post-hoc analysis showed a significant difference only between the control group (methylcellulose) and the other antibiotic groups. There was no significant difference between the other antibiotic groups in two-by-two comparisons. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the antimicrobial properties of DAP, TAP and CCM. Therefore, DAP and CCM may be used during regenerative treatment.

RESUMO

The present article reviews the literature regarding tetracycline staining of the dentition and its esthetic management. A total of 49 articles were identified in the initial search, and 22 articles met the eligibility criteria of this narrative literature review. Tetracycline staining results from its use in children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years, when tooth crowns are formed; the effects are dependent on the dosage, duration of treatment, stage of tooth mineralization, and activity of the mineralization process. Tooth bleaching is always the first treatment option for low-grade cases of tetracycline staining. Restorative procedures are indicated for severe staining. The article also describes the treatment of severe staining affecting the maxillary anterior dentition of a 48-year-old man who reported the systemic administration of tetracycline during childhood. Direct composite resin laminate veneers were proposed to achieve immediate, highly esthetic restorations. A combination of different resinous materials in different shades was applied to meet the needs of the patient. The use of direct composite resin laminate veneers satisfied the functional and esthetic demands of the patient at a lower cost than ceramic materials.

Yellow nail syndrome is a rare condition occurring sporadically, with an extremely low prevalence rate. This syndrome classically presents with a triad of lower extremity edema, yellow nails, and mucosal issues such as pleural effusion and/or chronic sinusitis. Two out of the three features are deemed sufficient to diagnose a person with yellow nail syndrome. We present a rare case of yellow nail syndrome that began with chronic leg swelling and later progressed to the development of an asymptomatic pleural effusion and finally discoloration of nails. In our case, the patient did have a significant recent history of a total knee replacement with a titanium implant. Of note was the chronology of events including leg edema and asymptomatic pleural effusion which were present even before the titanium knee implant. The third feature of the hardening and yellow discoloration of the nails was found to have developed following the knee replacement. Interestingly, on further evaluation, he was found to have IgM deficiency.

Minoxidil is a widely utilized medication androgenic alopecia. An original investigation on its potential to cause hair darkening in treated people is lacking. We conducted an observational study using two face-validated questionnaires that dermatologists altered to assess minoxidil's hair discolouration risk. This Saudi Arabian survey collected data in October and November 2022. One questionnaire targeted the population, while the other targeted dermatologists. Survey 1 included 453 patients, 56.7% of whom were 18-24 and mostly female. It's interesting that 26% (n=118) detected hair greying and 14.8% (n=67) noticed other color changes. With P-values of 0.0001, longer-term minoxidil users and those with a family history of hair greying had higher hair discolouration. Dermatologists completed Survey 2 (57 participants). Nearly 60% of dermatologists have ten years of experience. 42.1% of dermatologists saw grey hair after minoxidil use. 17.5% of doctors blame minoxidil for hair graying. This observational study examined the data of over 400 patients to determine if minoxidil could cause hair discoloration. Based on the data, we hypothesize that this drug may cause hair discoloration with prolonged use and in people with a family history of hair greying.

Aim: The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effect of calcium phophosilicate-based bioceramic "Totalfill bioceramic putty" and white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) as the coronal plug on discoloration after revascularization of necrotic immature permanent anterior teeth. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on (48) necrotic young permanent central incisors in children ranging from 8 to 14 years old, that were randomly allocated to either Totalfill bioceramic (Group I = 24) or WMTA (Group II = 24) as the coronal plug. Two visits revascularization protocol was adopted in this study using 1.5% sodium hypochlorite, followed by 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, and ending with a saline flush as irrigation solution. The double antibiotic paste was used as intracanal medication. The blood clot was used as scaffold followed by the application of collagen membrane followed by coronal plud malterial. Finally, the access was sealed using resin composite restoration and composite restoration. Clinical assessment was conducted at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, while radiographic assessment was conducted at 6 and 12 months. Data were statistically analyzed using the Chi-squared test for intergroup comparisons and Cochran's Q test for intragroup comparison. Results: Clinically, Group I exhibited a success rate of 100%, whereas Group II exhibited a success rate of 85.7%. Radiographically, both materials showed a 90.5% success rate. There was no statistically significant difference between both materials for all assessed clinical and radiographic parameters at different follow-up periods. Conclusions: Both Totalfill bioceramic putty and WMTA can be used successfully as coronal plug in esthetic areas.

The nutritional, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties of bovine colostrum (BC) have encouraged its use in animal nutrition as a functional food in recent years. Nonetheless, the potential implications of BC supplementation on meat quality remain to be thoroughly assessed. To address this, thirty-nine New Zealand White rabbits (n = 13/group) were fed different dietary regimens until slaughter.: commercial standard diet for the control group (C) and C with 2.5% and 5% w/w of BC for BC-2.5 and BC-5 groups, respectively. Rabbits were slaughtered at 91 days of age and meat quality, and sensory characteristics were evaluated at days 2 (48 h after slaughter), 5, and 10 of refrigerated storage at 4 °C. The addition of colostrum in the diet resulted in a reduction of the total viable count, albeit only at the highest concentration and at the final detection, whereas for Lactobacillus spp. and Pseudomonas spp., there was little or no effect. The colour coordinates showed no differences between the groups, but they varied over time according to diet. Some differences between groups emerged in the definition of sensory attributes but did not affect the overall liking and overall scores of individual descriptors. These results indicate that the use of colostrum in rabbit feeding does not significantly impart meat quality and sensory attributes, but the potential of this valuable by-product for the food industry needs further investigation.

AIM: This study aimed to identify the optimal toothpaste for removing coffee-induced stains while also evaluating its impact on tooth enamel through roughness and abraded depth parameters, providing a comprehensive understanding of their effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three whitening toothpastes and 2 conventional toothpastes were prepared for a simulated brushing procedure on coffee-stained bovine enamel tooth specimens. Using a toothbrushing machine, up to 10,000 brushstrokes were completed, while spectrophotometric readings were taken at designated intervals. A mixed-effects model for statistical analysis determined the effects of toothpaste and brushing on colour change, roughness, and abraded depth. RESULTS: Whitening toothpastes significantly deviated from the control (P < .001, P < .001, and P < .003, respectively), whereas the conventional toothpaste did not exhibit a significant contrast (P < .081). Regarding colour restoration following coffee staining, whitening toothpastes showed higher restoration than conventional toothpastes. Surface roughness and abraded depth parameters increased with accumulated brushing. CONCLUSIONS: Sodium hexametaphosphate-containing toothpaste demonstrated the highest efficacy in removing coffee-induced stains and restoring tooth colour. Nevertheless, this stronger whitening effect was associated with increased abrasion. While conventional toothpastes exhibited some whitening effects, the most substantial improvement in lightness was consistently observed with whitening toothpastes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Understanding how whitening toothpaste affects enamel integrity is crucial for refining formulations and advancing dental care. This knowledge lays the groundwork for more effective oral care products and improved whitening procedures, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of dental treatments.

Introducción: Se han desarrollado materiales bioactivos para el recubrimiento pulpar directo con el objetivo de preservar la pulpa dentaria y mantener el diente por mayor tiempo en la cavidad oral. Objetivo: El objetivo de esta revisión fue evaluar la efectividad del uso de bioceramicos como material de recubrimiento directo pulpar para mantener la vitalidad pulpar en dientes primarios y permanentes con pulpitis reversible. Metodología: Se realizó una revisión sistemática con meta análisis. Se estudió el éxito en el tratamiento del mantenimiento de la vitalidad, el dolor postoperatorio y la decoloración. Se realizó una búsqueda Electrónica en las bases de datos: MEDLINE, EMBASE, COCHRANE, SCOPUS, LILACS, BBO. Se extrajeron los datos y se analizaron con Rev Man. Resultados: Se incluyeron ensayos clínicos aleatorizados en la cual se realizaron recubrimiento pulpar directo con silicatos tricalcicos comparado con otros materiales de recubrimiento. Comparando tres biocerámicos no se encontraron diferencias significativas en el mantenimiento de la vitalidad pulpar. En cuanto a la decoloración se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas a favor de Biodentine (p <0,001). Discusión: la relevancia clínica de estos hallazgos es discutible debido a su pequeña magnitud general y al alto riesgo de sesgo de los estudios incluidos.


Introduction: Bioactive materials have been developed for direct pulp capping in order to preserve the dental pulp and keep the tooth longer in the oral cavity. Objective: The objective of this review was to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of bioceramics as direct pulp capping material to maintain pulp vitality in primary and permanent teeth with reversible pulpitis. Methods: A systematic review with meta-analysis was performed. Success in treating vitality maintenance, postoperative pain, and discoloration was studied. An electronic search was carried out in the databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, COCHRANE, SCOPUS, LILACS, BBO. Data were extracted and analyzed with Rev Man. Results: Randomized clinical trials in which direct pulp capping with tricalcium silicates was performed compared with other capping materials were included. Comparing three bioceramics, no significant differences were found in the maintenance of pulp vitality. Regarding discoloration, statistically significant differences were observed in favor of Biodentine (p <0.001). Discussion: the clinical relevance of these findings is debatable due to their small overall magnitude and the high risk of bias of the included studies.

Post-curing is the process of applying extra light to complete the polymerization process of 3D printing. The mechanical properties of light-cured three-dimensional (3D) printed resin can be improved by decreasing the oxygen concentrations during post-curing, and nitrogen-saturated post-curing has been applied for this purpose. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the color stability of 3D-printed resin crowns that were post-cured in both normal air and nitrogen-saturated conditions. Crowns were fabricated with a 3D printer and post-cured in normal air (control group; air) or nitrogen-saturated conditions (experimental group; nitrogen). The specimens in each group were subdivided into four subgroups, each exposed to different discoloration agents: distilled water, coffee, wine, and curry. Post-immersion color changes were measured using a digital spectrophotometer and analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy evaluated the degree of conversion of resin over immersion times for both post-curing conditions. Upon comparing the effects of post-curing conditions, a significant difference between the control and experimental groups in terms of immersion time in the wine and curry subgroups was found. FT-IR analysis showed a significant difference in the degree of conversion between the air and nitrogen groups from 10 to 300 s. These findings suggest that nitrogen-saturated post-curing can potentially enhance the conversion rate of 3D-printed resin crowns, thereby improving their color stability.

Rock-inhabiting fungi (RIF) are usually extremely tolerant or extremophilic, as they can survive on natural and artificial rocks despite being exposed to stressful conditions. RIF have serious negative effects on the appearance and cohesion of rocky substrates, causing the alteration and decomposition of building materials, but also on human and animal health, as they can act as opportunistic pathogens. Their identification is therefore of great importance, especially in urban areas. In the present study, culturing techniques for isolating fungi, and a polyphasic taxonomic approach to their identification, were used to assess the diversity of micromycetes that darken the surfaces of buildings in various villages and cities in Tarragona Province (Spain). Sixty-four species of RIF belonging to forty-one genera were identified, including a new genus (Coccodomyces) and the following six new fungal species: Coccodomyces pleiosporus, Exophiala caementiphila, Exophiala multiformis, Neocatenulostroma spinulosum, Neodevriesia longicatenispora, and Paradevriesia holothallica. Thus, we have established that building materials are ecological niches where a high biodiversity of RIF can develop.

In recent years, esthetic expectations have come to the fore in pediatric dentistry, as in every field of dentistry. Therefore, to better meet patients' expectations, the steps taken to determine and improve the current level of knowledge of pediatric dentists on tooth discoloration gain importance. This study aims to measure the knowledge levels of pediatric dentists regarding tooth discoloration. A 33-questioned survey created online was emailed to pediatric dentists between March and December 2021. The first part included four multiple-choice and two open-ended questions regarding demographic characteristics. The second part was to measure the participants' knowledge of tooth discoloration. The last part was to evaluate the clinical approaches of the participants. Participants who agreed to answer all of the questions were included in the study (n = 129). The knowledge levels of the participants were scored according to the accuracy of their answers. The data were statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Of the pediatric dentists who participated in this study, 16.3% had high knowledge, 79.8% had medium knowledge, and 3.9% had insufficient understanding of tooth discoloration. There was no correlation between time since dental school graduation and time spent practicing as a pediatric dentist (p > 0.05). The group with the highest average level of knowledge was the group most frequently encountered with tooth discoloration in the clinic (p ≤ 0.05). On average, pediatric dentists had moderate knowledge of tooth discoloration. The group with the highest average expertise in this field was the group that most frequently encountered and treated tooth discoloration. Information on tooth discoloration due to systemic factors was insufficient. To increase the knowledge level of pediatric dentists about the causes and treatments of tooth discoloration, it may be beneficial to establish training programs during and after specialization education.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOP), using semiconductor (SC) and hydroxyapatite (HA) composites, are promising due to the synergy of photocatalytic and adsorption properties. Still, dye removal efficiency of composites based on HA-SC remains low, because most of the research reported consider single SC materials. In this work, nanocrystalline xerogels of titanium oxide (TiO2) with copper oxide (CuO) and HA were synthesized by the sol-gel process. HA was obtained by the precipitation method without heat treatment and calcined in the range of 200-1000 °C. TiO2 and copper precursors were added to a sol containing HA in a 12:1 mol ratio, obtaining HA-TiO2 and HA-CuO-TiO2 nanomaterials. The xerogels were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, emission field scanning electron microscopy and photoresponse. Their performance in the photocatalytic discoloration of an aqueous solution acid yellow dye 36 (AY36) was evaluated, using visible and UV light. The best discoloration was achieved with HA-CuO-TiO2 xerogels with HA calcined at 600 °C, showing a degradation kinetic constant of 0.24 min-1. In contrast, HA-TiO2 materials showed little or no photocatalytic activity, but strong dye adsorption/desorption. The thermal treatment of HA determines the filament-like morphology and degree of compaction of the nanomaterials, which are relevant in the crystallite size and sensitization of the SC matrix. Further studies must address the surface chemistry and rectifying properties of the best SC composite to have a more complete understanding of the mechanisms involved.

With direct application to current and future consumer healthcare products, this research sheds light on the importance of packaging and its potential effects on both Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) delivery and stability. Industrially sourced, proprietary experimental formulations (PEFs), specifically oral cleansers, based on salicylic acid and hydrogen peroxide, discolored over time at different rates, depending on packaging type used. This discoloration stemmed from an interplay of two factors, involving both spontaneous formulation degradation and the interaction of both degradants and salicylic acid with the internal surface of the packaging. This manuscript reports on the investigation to uncover the origins of discoloration. To investigate this real-world, industrial pipeline problem, we exploited the high dimensionality and simple sample preparation uniquely afforded by NMR. Using a combination of 1D/2D NMR and diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) to leverage molecular mass estimations from, we not only quickly confirmed the identities of these degradants, but also assessed their formation as a function of temperature and pH, providing insight into the mechanisms underlying their formation. We were able to identify catechol as the main source of discoloration over a period of several weeks, being formed at the ppm level. Furthermore, we evaluated the formulation-container interaction, employing NMR, ICP-MS, and ATR-IR. Despite this comprehensive analysis, the root causes of discoloration could only tentatively be assigned to a surface Ti complex of salicylic acid and other hydroxy carboxylic acids. Through the understanding of formulation degradation pathways, we were able to support further toxicology assessment, vital to both consumer safety and the manufacturer. This work underscores the invaluable role of NMR in the analysis of intricate proprietary mixtures with a consumer-centric purpose. Our findings demonstrate that conventional analytical techniques falter in the face of such complexity, requiring extensive preparation and pre-analytical processing, highlighting the novelty and crucial relevance of NMR research to manufacturers and consumers. Such an analysis is of value in the pursuit of materials within the consumer-healthcare space, which meet the requirements for successful recycling or re-use.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of repolishing procedures on the color change of bulk-fill resin composites after being exposed to coffee. Materials and methods: Four bulk-fill resin composites (Filtek One bulk-fill, Tetric EvoCeram bulk-fill, Admira Fusion x-tra bulk-fill, Grandio SO x-tra bulk-fill) were tested. Sixty samples were prepared with each resin composite and were randomly divided into two groups: first one received the one-step polishing system (Optragloss) and the other group received the two-step polishing system (Nova Twist) (n=30). After being kept in coffee for 12 days, the samples were divided into three subgroups according to repolishing: one-step repolishing group, two-step repolishing group, and non-repolishing group (n=10 for each). Color measurements of the resin composite samples were determined with a spectrophotometer. The difference in color change was calculated using the CIEDE 2000 color formula. The data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey test. Results: Among composite materials, Filtek One bulk-fill (1.84 ± 0.98) less color change was observed compared to others (p<0.001). In terms of polishing systems, Optragloss (2.96 ± 1.51) showed significantly greater color change than Nova Twist (2.21 ± 1.07) (p<0.001). The non-repolishing group (3.78 ± 1.25) presented significantly greater color change than the Nova Twist sytem (1.49 ± 0.61) and Optragloss system (2.50 ± 1.01) (p<0.001). Conclusion: The repolishing process reduced discoloration. A two-step repolishing system results in less color change compared to a one-step repolishing application. In polishing systems containing diamond particles, increasing the number of steps can contribute to color stability.

The discoloration switching appearing in the initial and final growth stages of 4H-silicon carbide (4H-SiC) single crystals grown using the physical vapor transport (PVT) technique was investigated. This phenomenon was studied, investigating the correlation with linear-type micro-pipe defects on the surface of 4H-SiC single crystals. Based on the experimental results obtained using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and micro-Raman analysis, it was deduced that the orientation of the 4H-SiC c-axis causes an axial change that correlates with low levels of carbon. In addition, it was confirmed that the incorporation of additional elements and the concentrations of these doped impurity elements were the main causes of discoloration and changes in growth orientation. Overall, this work provides guidelines for evaluating the discoloration switching in 4H-SiC single crystals and contributes to a greater understanding of this phenomenon.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of the pre-application of a dentin-bonding agent and the application of different lasers on the prevention of tooth discoloration caused by mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) in the presence of blood. Sixty extracted human anterior teeth were selected, with root lengths standardized to 10 mm and root canals shaped using Gates-Glidden drills #3 to #5. The samples were divided into six groups (n = 10): Group 1 with no surface treatment and Groups 2 to 6 with Optibond universal adhesive and Neodymium yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG), Erbium yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG), Erbium-chromium-yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er:Cr:YSGG), and diode laser applications, respectively. Root canals were filled with fresh human blood, and ProRoot MTA and a collagen barrier were then placed. Color changes were measured with a spectrophotometer at 0, 7, 30, 90, and 180 days post MTA placement. Color differences (∆E) were analyzed using a two-factor mixed-design ANOVA with the Sidak method (p = 0.05). All treatment groups exhibited discoloration above the acceptability threshold. Although all treatment approaches exhibited less color change compared to the control group (p < 0.05), there was no significant difference among them in terms of preventing color change (p > 0.05). It was determined that none of the methods could guarantee 100% prevention of discoloration caused by MTA-blood contact.

The use of multivitamins has become widespread globally, yet there is a scarcity of studies investigating their impact on resin composite restorations. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an effervescent multivitamin tablet on micro-hybrid dental resin composites' surface roughness and color. Fifty disc-shaped samples (8 × 2 mm, shade A2; n = 10) were prepared and polished using five different micro-hybrid resin composites (Pergamon, Dentac, Turkey; Estelite Posterior, Tokuyama, Japan; Geanial Anterior, GC, Japan; Charisma Opal, Kulzer, Germany; Beautifil II, Shofu, USA). Samples were immersed in 200 mL water to one effervescent multivitamin tablet (Redoxon Triple Action, Bayer) at 24 °C for 2 min a day in 24 h intervals for 30 days. All samples' surface roughness (Ra) and ΔE(L*a*b) measurements were recorded at the beginning and end of the 30 days. The Wald chi-square and a two-way ANOVA were used for statistical analysis (significance level p < 0.05). The resin composite type and exposure to the multivitamin had a statistically significant effect on Ra values (p < 0.05). The resin composite type had a statistically significant effect on ΔE values, likely due to the higher mean value of BII (p = 0.040). The surface roughness and color of resin composites can be affected by multivitamins with a pH value of 3.0. Therefore, it is important to consider the patient's routine vitamin intake during resin composite selection. Additional research is required to explore the properties of different dental restorative materials.

The clinical manifestation of superficial candidiasis varies depending on the infectious sites and causative Candida species that brings a great challenge to diagnose or treat without mycological or pathological evidence in clinical settings. Oral mucosal candidiasis and onychomycosis are most common types of superficial candidiasis. Typically, oral mucosal candidiasis manifests as white or erythematous thrush coated on the tongue and other interior oral cavity; and onychomycosis caused by Candida spp. presents with thick, fragile, or cracked fingernails or toenails in yellow or white discoloration. Here, we report one case of patient with a black hairy tongue caused by Candida tropicalis and one case of greenish discolored onychomycosis caused by Candida parapsilosis. The cases of superficial candidiasis with the same discolored lesions were searched in literature and compared with our cases in clinical manifestation, causative pathogen and treatment. These cases highlight the importance of mycological diagnosis for identifying non-Candida albicans Candida species (NCAC) in superficial infections to guide an effective therapy.
